Before

• A local café upgraded its back-of-house access control by replacing a traditional swingbolt with a smart digital lock. The goal was to improve security, reduce key/lock management issues, and make staff access simpler-especially during early opens, late closes, and shift changes.

• Removed the existing swingbolt hardware and prepared the mounting area.
• Installed the smart digital lock with a secure latch/bolt mechanism suitable for frequent commercial use.

Existing hardware: Standard keyed entrance leverset (single-cylinder, key outside / lever inside)

Before:

• Keys were difficult to manage: Staff and contractors needed access at different times, which meant issuing keys, tracking them, and collecting them back.
• Security risk from lost or unreturned keys: When a key went missing or a staff member left, the office faced the choice of either accepting the risk or paying to rekey/replace hardware.

What we did: Installation & Configuration

Solution selected: Smart digital lock (smart keypad-style lock) installed in place of the existing entrance leverset.

Step 1 – Site assessment & lock suitability

• Confirmed the door type, thickness, backset, and latch alignment.
• Checked the existing hole preparation (lever set bore and latch cut-out) to ensure the smart lock could retrofit cleanly.
• Verified the door frame and strike condition to ensure reliable latching and secure closing.

Step 2 – Removal of the existing entrance leverset

• Removed external and internal lever handles, latch, and strike hardware as required.
• Inspected the latch area for wear that could affect smooth locking/unlocking.

Step 3 – Smart digital lock installation (retrofit)

• Installed the new smart lock in the same door preparation used by the leverset, minimizing carpentry.
• Fitted the latch/bolt components and aligned the strike plate for consistent engagement.
• Tested for smooth operation: door closing, latch engagement, lock/unlock function, and handle action.

Step 4 – Setup of access and admin controls

Configured the lock for the office’s day-to-day use:

• Created unique PIN codes for staff.
• Set up temporary codes for contractors/cleaners (where supported).
• Established admin access for the office manager (and a backup admin where needed).
• Confirmed lock settings such as auto-lock timing and privacy/inside egress behavior (to ensure safe exit).

Step 5 – Handover & training

Provided a short handover to the office manager covering:

• Adding/removing user codes
• Responding to a suspected compromised code
• Battery replacement schedule and low-battery warnings
• Basic troubleshooting (misalignment, door not latching, etc.)

After
