Lost or broken the key to your VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo or Peugeot in Canberra? In most cases a mobile automotive locksmith can cut and program a replacement at your car, usually for less than the dealer and without a tow. Some newer models still need a key ordered in or dealer access, and we will tell you which on the first call.

Why European car keys cost more and are often dealer-locked

European keys cost more because the key is part of the car’s security system, not just a piece of cut metal. Replacing one means programming it to the car’s immobiliser, and European makers lock that process down harder than most.

  • Encrypted immobilisers. Each key carries a transponder chip that must match the car’s immobiliser module. European brands use some of the most heavily encrypted systems on the road.
  • Security codes and online access. Many models need a PIN, security code or online authorisation from the manufacturer before a new key can be added. Dealers have this access by default; independent locksmiths need the right equipment and, for some models, the right subscriptions.
  • Laser-cut (high-security) blades. Most European keys use internally milled or track-cut blades that need a specialist cutting machine.
  • Dealer process. Dealers often order a key from overseas, cut to your VIN, then charge separately for fitting and programming. That adds both cost and waiting time.
  • Smart and proximity keys. Keyless entry fobs cost more to supply and program than a basic remote.

Make by make: what to expect

Whether we can do your key on-site depends mostly on the make, model and build year. Use this as a guide, then call with your year and model for a firm answer.

Make Common models in Canberra Why it is harder
Volkswagen Golf, Polo, Tiguan, Amarok, Passat Immobiliser needs pairing data from the car; newer platforms are more locked down
Audi A3, A4, Q3, Q5, Q7 Shares VW Group security but newer generations add tighter protection
BMW 1, 3 and 5 Series, X1, X3, X5 Key data stored in a body or access module that must be read and programmed
Mercedes-Benz A, C and E-Class, GLC, Sprinter Later security generations use keys coded to the vehicle by Mercedes
Volvo XC40, XC60, XC90, V60 Newer Volvos have closed security access
Peugeot 208, 2008, 3008, 308, Partner Programming typically needs the car's security PIN

Not sure what you have? Your build year is on the compliance plate or your registration papers. Read it to us when you call 02 6290 1938.

What we can do on-site vs what needs ordering

Most jobs are finished at your car in one visit. A minority need a key ordered first, and we will tell you up front.

Job On-site Needs ordering
Spare key (you still have one working key) Usually Rarely
All keys lost Often Some late-model BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo
Laser-cut blade cutting Yes No
Remote or smart key programming Most models Keys coded to your VIN by the manufacturer
Broken shell or worn buttons Yes, re-shell and transfer electronics No
Key stuck or snapped in ignition or door Yes No
Locked out with keys inside Yes No

If your key must be ordered, we can often still get you moving: open the car, extract a broken key, or cut an emergency blade while the programmed key arrives.

Proof of ownership

We must confirm the car is yours before we make any key. This protects you and is standard practice for licensed automotive locksmiths.

Please have ready:

  • Photo ID, such as an ACT or interstate driver licence
  • Proof the car is yours or that you are authorised to use it, such as ACT registration papers or a purchase contract in your name
  • Company or lease cars: a letter or email of authority from the fleet manager or finance company
  • Your VIN, visible at the base of the windscreen or on your registration papers (needed for keys ordered from the manufacturer)

Names must match. If the car is in a partner’s or relative’s name, have them on hand or arrange written authority before we arrive.

Typical turnaround

Most on-site European key jobs take about 30 to 90 minutes once we arrive. Keys that must be ordered take longer.

Situation Typical turnaround
Spare key, key in stock Same day, often within hours of your call
All keys lost, programmable on-site Same day or next day
Key ordered to your VIN Usually a few business days, then one visit to program
Dealer, for comparison Often one to two weeks, plus a tow if no key is left

Times depend on your model, stock on hand and where you are in the ACT. We confirm an arrival window when you book.

Cost: mobile locksmith vs dealer

A mobile locksmith is usually the cheaper and faster option for European keys, mainly because you avoid towing, waiting and separate fitting charges. We quote a fixed price over the phone before we come out.

Mobile locksmith Dealer
Comes to you Yes, anywhere in Canberra No, car must be at the dealership
Towing if all keys lost Not needed Often needed
Key supply Quality aftermarket or genuine, depending on model Genuine only
Programming Included in the quote Often charged separately
Waiting time Often same day Often days to weeks
Price Fixed quote before we attend Varies by dealer

What affects your price: make and model, whether you have a working key, smart key vs flip key, after-hours call-outs, and whether the key must be ordered. Call 02 6290 1938 with your make, model and year for an exact quote.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
